How Online Play Works

Playing tic tac toe online just means two browsers talking to the same game room on our server. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for. Here's the short version.

  1. Create a game. One click - No account, no download. You're seated as X.
  2. Share the link (or the 6-letter code) by text, chat or carrier pigeon.
  3. Play live. The moment your friend opens the link, the game begins. Moves appear on both screens instantly, the starting player alternates each round, and the score keeps itself.

The Room Code, Explained

Every game gets a random 6-letter room code, like QK7MRX. It's really just a shorter, easier-to-say version of the link. The code isn't tied to your name or device, and it isn't stored anywhere public - Only someone with the exact code (or the link) can enter that room. Once both seats are full, the room locks and a third visitor sees "room full" instead of a board.

Reconnecting After a Dropped Signal

Connections drop, phones lock, buses go through tunnels - No problem. The game state lives on our server, not in your browser tab, so reopening the same link puts you right back in your seat with the board and score intact. Your opponent just sees a short pause, not a lost game. Rooms close automatically after two hours of inactivity, so an old link won't sit open forever.

Playing on a Phone vs. a Computer

The board resizes itself for whatever screen you're on. On a phone, tap a square with your thumb; on a desktop, click with a mouse. Because the match is stored online rather than on one device, you can even start a game on your laptop and finish it from your phone, as long as you reopen the same room link.

Fair Play, Built In

All moves are validated on the server - The same board both players see is the only board there is, so there's no way to play out of turn or overwrite a square.

Turn Order and the First-Move Rule

Going first alternates every round automatically, because first move is a genuine advantage. Neither player has to remember whose turn it is to start; the app handles it after every round.

Rematches and Scorekeeping

When a round ends, a rematch button appears for both players. Tap it and a fresh board loads instantly in the same room, with the running score carried over. There's no need to share a new link for every game, which makes a best-of-five (or best-of-fifty) session painless. If you want to brush up before the next round, the strategy guide covers forks, blocks and the center-square opening - We won't tell your friend you read it. You can also review the full rules of tic tac toe if a dispute ever comes up.

Online Mode vs. Other Ways to Play

Not sure which mode fits your situation? Here's how Online Multiplayer stacks up against the site's other two-player option.

In short: pick Online Multiplayer when you can't hand over the phone, and pick the same-screen mode when you're sitting side by side.

Online Multiplayer FAQ

How do I play tic tac toe online with a friend?

Click Create a Game to get a private link and a 6-letter code. Send either to your friend - The moment they open it, the game starts live, with moves appearing on both screens instantly. No account or download for either of you.

Can I play against a random stranger?

No - Online games are private. You only play with someone you share the link or 6-letter code with; there is no random matchmaking or public lobby. To play a computer opponent instead, use Easy, Medium or Hard mode.

Do we need to be on the same WiFi?

No - This is true online play over the internet. Any two devices with a browser will do: phones, tablets, laptops, one of each.

Can more than two people join a game?

A game holds exactly two players - Tic tac toe is a duel. Anyone else who opens the link is told the room is full. For a group, run a tournament: winners keep the room, challengers get the link.

Is online tic tac toe free?

Yes - Online multiplayer is completely free, with no account, no download and no paywall. Every mode on TicTacToe.now is free.

What if we'd rather share one screen?

Then 2 player mode is simpler - Same scoreboard, no link needed. Online mode is for when you can't hand the phone over.
