Frequently Asked Questions

Everything players ask about TicTacToe.now, from basic rules and winning strategy to variants like Ultimate and Misère, plus a few questions about the site itself.

Is TicTacToe.now really free?

Yes. Every game mode - Easy, Medium, Hard, 5x5 and 2 Player - Is completely free. There is no download, no account and no paywall. Just open the page and play.

Do I need to create an account to play?

No. Nothing on TicTacToe.now requires registration. Your wins, losses and draws for the current session are tracked in your browser only.

Can I beat the Hard mode computer?

No - And that's the point. Hard mode uses the minimax algorithm, a method that checks every possible move before picking the best one.

Why It Never Loses

Minimax plays out every remaining game to the end before it moves, so it always sees your threats coming. It plays perfectly, which means the best result you can get against it is a draw.

A Fair Target to Aim For

If you can force a draw on Hard mode every time, you have mastered tic tac toe. Our math page shows exactly why perfect play always ends this way.

What is the difference between Easy, Medium and Hard mode?

Each mode plays differently, so pick the one that matches your skill level:
  • Easy mode: Plays mostly random moves and leaves openings. Great for kids and beginners.
  • Medium mode: Takes winning moves and blocks your threats but doesn't plan ahead. You can beat it with a double threat, called a fork.
  • Hard mode: Plays perfectly using the minimax algorithm. It can never be beaten, only drawn.

Which One Should You Start On?

New players and kids should start on Easy. Once winning feels too easy, move up to Medium, then try to force a draw on Hard.

How do you win at tic tac toe?

Follow a few simple rules and you can beat most opponents.

Start in the center or a corner

These are the strongest opening squares. They give you the most ways to build a line of three.

Create a fork

A fork is when you set up two winning threats at once. Your opponent can only block one, so you win with the other.

Block every threat

Check the board for your opponent's two-in-a-row before every move. Miss a block and you lose.

Against a perfect opponent the game always ends in a draw, but most human and Easy mode opponents can be beaten with a fork. See our How to Win guide for the full strategy.

What are the rules of 5x5 tic tac toe?

Our 5x5 mode is played on a five-by-five grid. You need four in a row - Horizontally, vertically or diagonally - To win. The bigger board means many more forks and much deeper strategy than the classic 3x3 game.

Can I play against a friend on the same device?

Yes. The 2 Player mode lets two people share one screen and take turns as X and O, with a running score across rounds. It works on phones, tablets and desktops.

Can I play tic tac toe online with a friend on a different device?

Yes - Use Online mode. Here is how it works:
  • Create a game with one click.
  • Send your friend the private link or 6-letter code.
  • Play live from any two devices, anywhere.
  • No accounts needed, and scores carry across rounds.

If the connection drops, the game just pauses until you reopen the link.

Does tic tac toe always end in a draw?

Only when both players play perfectly.

The solved game

Tic tac toe is a solved game. That means every possible move has been mapped out. With perfect play from both sides, every game is a draw.

When wins happen

Wins happen when one player makes a mistake, usually by missing a block or allowing a fork.

Is tic tac toe a solved game?

Yes. Tic tac toe is a solved game - Mathematicians have mapped out every possible position, so the best move in any situation is already known.

What that means for you

With perfect play from both sides, the result is always a draw. You can never force a win against a flawless opponent like our Hard mode, but you can always avoid losing by playing correctly.

What is the best first move in tic tac toe?

The center is the strongest opening move - It sits on four of the eight winning lines, more than any other square.

If the center is taken

Take a corner next; each corner sits on three winning lines. Edges are the weakest opening squares. Opening in the center or a corner is the first step to setting up a fork.

Can you always win at tic tac toe?

No - You cannot force a win against an opponent who plays perfectly; the game is a draw with best play from both sides.

But you can always avoid losing

Take the center or a corner, complete a winning line whenever you can, and always block your opponent's two-in-a-row. Do that every turn and you will never lose - The worst outcome becomes a draw. Most casual and Easy mode opponents can still be beaten outright with a fork.

Who goes first in tic tac toe?

The traditional rule

X moves first, and going first is a real advantage. Across all 255,168 possible games, X wins about 1.7 times as often as O (131,184 wins to 77,904).

On TicTacToe.now

You play X and move first against the computer. In 2 Player mode, the starting player alternates each round.

Does TicTacToe.now work on mobile?

Yes. The whole site is built mobile-first - The board scales to your screen and every mode works with touch. No app install needed.

What is Ultimate Tic Tac Toe?

Ultimate Tic Tac Toe is played on nine 3x3 boards arranged in one big 3x3 grid.

How to win

Win a small board to claim it. Win three claimed boards in a row to win the whole game.

The twist

The square you pick decides which small board your opponent must play in next. That single rule turns simple tic tac toe into a deep strategy game.

You can play it free on our Ultimate page.

What is misère (reverse) tic tac toe?

Misère tic tac toe flips the rules: whoever makes three in a row loses. It sounds simple, but it inverts every instinct you have - The center becomes dangerous and forks become traps. Our Misère mode includes a perfect-play computer opponent.

Why is it called tic tac toe?

The American name

By the most common account, the name evolved in the 1800s from 'tit-tat-toe', a chant children used while tapping out moves.

Other English names

In Britain the game is called noughts and crosses (a nought is a zero, i.e. the O), and in Ireland it's often Xs and Os.

Can I print blank tic tac toe boards?

Yes - Our printable boards page gives you clean sheets of blank 3x3 or 5x5 grids that print straight from your browser with no headers or clutter. Great for classrooms, car trips and paper tournaments.
