The Nine Small Boards

Every one of the nine small boards plays out exactly like a normal game. Same rules, same forks, same draws if both players are careful. Win a small board the regular way, three in a row, and that claims one spot on the big board above it.

The Meta Board

The meta board is the big 3×3 grid that sits on top of the nine small ones. It doesn't hold X's and O's directly. Instead, it tracks which player has won each small board. Win three small boards in a row on the meta board, and you win the whole game.

The Twist That Changes Everything

Here's the part that makes this a genuinely different game, not just a bigger one. Whichever square you play inside a small board decides which small board your opponent has to play in next.

Send Your Opponent Somewhere

Play the top-right square anywhere, and your opponent gets sent to the top-right board. There's no choosing where you'd like to go next. Your last move made that decision for you.

Two Decisions in One Move

Every move you make is really two decisions rolled into one: what helps you locally, and where you're about to send your opponent. A fork, a move that threatens to win two lines at once, is still the sharpest weapon in the game. But now you also have to ask whether your fork sends your opponent into a board where they can hurt you back. Regular tic tac toe has been completely mapped. There are 5,478 possible positions, and the result with correct play is always a draw.

What "Solved" Means

A game is solved when someone has checked every possible position and proven what the outcome must be with perfect play from both sides. Super Tic Tac Toe is a different story. Nine boards feed into each other. Every move affects two boards at once. That combination makes the game tree, the full map of every possible sequence of moves, grow enormous.

Estimates vary. But everyone agrees it dwarfs the 255,168 possible games hiding inside the classic version. Nobody has found a way to fully solve it. There's no known "perfect strategy" to memorize. That's exactly why skilled human play still matters here.
